La mia creatura è nata! My baby is online!
Martedì sera ho finito di fare l’editing e il layout della nuova rivista online The People We Are dell'associazione delle donne professioniste di Roma. E’ una magazine di 30 pagine circa con articoli, rubriche mensili sulla cultura, salute, social media e libri, notizie sulle socie PWA e foto-reportage di eventi. Sono la Newsletter Editor da due anni e in passato la rivista mensile veniva stampata in bianco e nero e distribuita alle socie presenti alla conferenza. Il giorno dopo la stessa edizione veniva inviata alle socie per posta elettronica. Ora siamo del tutto digitali per poter: 1) migliorare il progetto grafico - rendere la rivista più spassosa, colorata e viva 2) aumentare interattivività - i lettori possono ora commentare, condividere e cliccare sui link multimediali 3) diminuire l’impatto ecologico - vogliamo evitare di tagliare alberi inutilmente Con la versione digitale posso utilizzare molti più colori, immagini e caratteri, senza dovermi preoccupare di come apparirà su stampa bianco e nero. Per la pura gioia di poterlo fare forse stavolta ho anche esagerato un po’. L’editing dei testi è effettuata dalla nostra co-editor Lisa R Tucci la quale è una vera esperta e professionista - e anche piuttosto pignola riguardo le regole dell'editing. Ma d’altronde non ci accontenteremmo di altre! E sfido chiunque a trovare errori ortografici o grammaticali…non ce n’è dovrebbero essere! Grazie a Lisa sto imparando un sacco sull’editing. Ci vogliono giorni per creare il layout pagina dopo pagina su InDesign ma è molto piacevole e stimulante. Di solito parto leggendo la storia che ho ricevuto e associando colori e immagini opportuni al tema. Impagino ciascun articolo singolarmente e poi, una volta che sono tutti pronti, faccio un altro giro di editing e modifiche per far sì che stiano bene insieme. Sono curiosa di sapere cosa ne pensate, quindi buttate giù qualche riga di commento al più presto possibile!

Tuesday night I finished editing and laying out the brand-new online magazine The People We Are of The Professional Women’s Association of Rome. It is a 30-page monthly newsletter with feature articles, regular columns on culture, health, social media and books, member news and features, and photo recaps of past events. I’ve been the Newsletter Editor for the past two years and it was always printed in black and white and distributed to those present at the monthly conferences. The day after the issues were sent via email to PWA members. Now we have gone completely digital in order: 1) improve the layout - to make the magazine more fun, colorful and lively 2) increase interactiveness - readers can comment, share and click through links 3) decrease the negative impact on nature - we do not want to waste trees for printing. With the digital version I am able to use a lot more color and different images and fonts without having to think about how it would look or read on a b/w print. For the sheer joy of using color I might have overdone it a bit this time. The editing of the texts is done by my co-editor Lisa R Tucci who is a true editing expert - and very detail-oriented to say the least. But then, I wouldn’t want anything less than her! And I challenge anyone to find grammar of type mistakes…there shouldn’t be any! Thanks to Lisa and her expertise I am learning so much about editing. It takes days to carefully lay out the pages with InDesign but it is a lot of fun. I normally start off by reading the story/article I have received and associating appropriate colors, images and fonts to it. I lay out each article one by one and then when they are all ready I do another round of editing and modifications to make it all fit together nicely. I’m very curious to hear what you think about the magazine so send me a line asap!
